Thank you for your continued support of UAF
Dear incredible UAF supporters,
Thank you for your past philanthropic gifts to UAF. Whether your passion is for research, teaching or public service, your contributions benefit UAF students, the Alaska economy, our nation and the broader world.
As you may have heard, the University of Alaska system, including UAF, is facing a fiscal crisis following unprecedented and massive budget vetoes by Alaska’s governor. Because of this, the governing board for the university has decided to move toward a major restructuring of the higher education landscape, from the current three separately accredited universities of UAF, UA Anchorage and UA Southeast, to a single accredited institution. Major consolidations of programs, and program eliminations, are expected in our new reality. These are uncharted waters for us, and the path ahead is uncertain. My overarching concerns are for our students and the important research UAF conducts.
I’m writing to assure you that donor intent is something we will honor. All privately funded scholarships and support funds within the University of Alaska Foundation will continue to be used for their intended purposes. In the event that a program supported by private funding is eliminated, or other conditions of an original gift mean it can no longer be used in the way the donor intended, we will connect with the original donor to discuss options before doing anything else.
The UA Foundation, where private philanthropic support is invested and held, is an independent 501(c)(3), separate from UAF and from the other UA campuses. Its resources must be used in a manner consistent with donor wishes.
I understand you may have some questions and that you may be holding off on a current gift decision due to these uncertain times. In our 102-year history, UAF has never faced political and budget turmoil like this. As chancellor, I wish I knew exactly what the future holds. I do know that our great university will survive this struggle, and it’s my sincere hope that good friends like you stand alongside us as we move into the next phase of our long story.
Please call UAF’s Office of Development at 907-474-2619, or email them at firstname.lastname@example.org, if you have questions. Thank you again for your support of Nanook Nation.
