Collection Policies and Loans

COLLECTIONS ACCESS

The Archaeology Department welcomes appropriate use of all the collections in its care. The Archaeology Department endeavors to encourage use of the collections for research and education while ensuring the preservation of the collections for future generations of scholars and students. Access to the archaeological collections is granted to researchers with clear research goals and institutional affiliations for legitimate research and educational purposes only. Some of the specimens in the collections are of a highly sensitive nature and access to these collections may be restricted. Access to the collections is subject to the University of Alaska Museum of the North (UAMN) Collections Management Policy and the Archaeology Department Collections Access Policy. Researchers interested in accessing the archaeology collections should contact the Archaeology Curator or Collections Manager.

DEPOSITING COLLECTIONS

The University of Alaska Museum of the North (UAMN) curates archaeological collections from state, federal, private and Alaska Native lands in Alaska for future research, exhibit, and instruction. When a collection is deposited at the Museum, UAMN assumes a commitment to ensure the safe storage and availability for study and exhibition of that collection in perpetuity or to the extent allowed by an established agreement. In order to meet this commitment, UAMN has formulated the following procedures and requirements. Curation of archaeological collections should be considered during the planning phase of the project. Archaeologists interested in designating UAMN as the repository for their collections should read the Curation Guidelines and submit a Provisional Curation Request to the UAMN Archaeology Department.
