What Is Outdoor Adventures?

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Outdoor Adventures to foster personal growth and a spirit of adventure for the UAF community through education, experience and accessibility in the wilderness of Alaska and right here on campus.

Outdoor Adventures Trips

Experienced university staff and student leaders lead trips throughout Alaska year round.  Become immersed in the many different ways to recreate in the immense Alaska backcountry.  Our trips vary in length from short half-day trips to seven days.  Summer trips include extended wilderness backpacks, day hikes, canoeing, sea kayaking, rock climbing, and white water rafting!  In the winter, we offer snowshoeing, cross country skiing, dog mushing, ice climbing, winter camping, and cabin trips!  We also offer a Wilderness Welcome Trip at the begining of the fall semester for incoming freshmen. Click here for upcoming trips and events.

 Equipment Rental

Alaska's challenging weather and environmental conditions require expensive high quality outdoor gear.  Outdoor Adventures is proud to offer a variety of high quality outdoor rental gear at inexpensive rates.  Click here to view equipment and rates.   We enable students to explore the immense Alaska Wilderness without spending thousands of dollars on Alaska worthy outdoor equipment.

Campus Activities And Events

Outdoor Adventures offers an increasing number of outdoor-related activities and events.  We help sponsor events such as the Banff Mountain Film Festival, the Warren Miller Ski Movie, Teton Gravity Research Ski Movie, and the Annual Winter Gear Swap! We sponsor skill workshops such as cross country skiing, avalanche awareness and others.

Academic Classes

Outdoor Adventures also offers a variety of classes ranging from Ice Climbing to Mountaineering, Wilderness First Aid and Advanced Wilderness Leadership.  Click HERE for more information  on classes. We also coordinate courses with other academic departments to ensure a good time and the safety of students in the wilderness, for classes such as Glaciology Field Methods or Introduction to Outdoor Photography.  We are always working to grow our course offerings and are open to suggestions.

The Outdoor Adventures program is committed to practicing and promoting outdoor safety.  We work to train our employees to recognize the inherent risks that exist in all outdoor recreation activies, and to give them stategies and procedures to help mitagate these risks.  We organize a wide variety of outdoor safety training for both our staff and members of the university community.
