Education
Cam earned his undergraduate degree (BS) in biology from Monmouth University and graduate degree (MA) in international relations from Webster University in 1986 and 1995 respectively, and Ph.D. in security and disaster management (interdisciplinary programs) in 2017.
History with CBSM
Cameron “Cam” Carlson was named dean of the College of Business and Security Management in August 2022, after previously serving as associate dean. He is the founding director for the homeland security and emergency management undergraduate and graduate programs, and the Center for Arctic Security and Resilience. Dr. Carlson has led multiple CBSM initiatives to increase enrollment through expanded program offerings, transfer agreements, and strategic planning efforts.
Background
Prior to joining UAF in 2003, Cam devoted 25 years of active duty service in the U.S. Army, where he served in various leadership and staff roles. He deployed extensively to the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Haiti and the Central Asian states, supporting humanitarian assistance, non-combatant evacuation, peacekeeping as well as operations supporting the Global War on Terrorism. In 2006, he retired from active duty service as a lieutenant colonel.
Dean Responsibilities
The dean supervises the various CBSM academic programs and has overall managerial and fiscal responsibilities for the college. As CBSM dean, Cam maintains a strong focus on student recruitment, admission, and academic success, continuing to build on CBSM’s achievements in these areas.
Off Duty
Cam enjoys mountain biking, wine tasting and spending time outdoors with his wife and family. He and his wife Debbie have three adult daughters, all who graduated from UAF. The family also includes a golden retriever and two mischievous cats.
