About R/V Nanuq
R/V Nanuq, the Inupiat word for "polar bear," was commissioned in 2019 and is operated by the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. The vessel boasts a 1,000 lb hydraulic A-frame, a dive platform, and a cruising speed of 20+ knots. With her 13-foot aft deck, R/V Nanuq is designed to accommodate the deployment of a wide variety of equipment to support oceanographic and marine biology research, including CTD rosettes, plankton nets, moorings, and tow sleds. Nanuq can conduct operations anywhere along the north coast of the Gulf of Alaska—Yakutat through the Kodiak Archipelago.

Features
The cabin features four bunks for berthing, a dinette table, two forward-facing helm seats, and an aft -facing seat with workstation viewing the back deck. The head is equipped with a pullout shower and the galley contains a 2.7 cubic foot AC/DC refrigerator, as well as a microwave/convection oven. A 4.6 cubic foot So-Low freezer is available for research needs. Nanuq is equipped with a seawater sampling and underway data collection system. Learn more about underway systems.

The day rate for Nanuq includes shoreside logistics and administrative support. The vessel can be reserved and used by academic and research-oriented organizations. Scheduling preference is given to University of Alaska researchers.
