General Studies — Exploratory Major

Bachelor's Degree Program

With so many exciting degree options to choose from, picking a major can sometimes feel overwhelming. A great option is to begin an exploratory general studies major. This is very common — a third of all incoming UAF students start college as exploratory or general studies majors.

Some great reasons to select general studies are:

  • You’re interested in multiple degree fields
  • You’re not quite sure what you’re interested in yet
  • You haven't met all the specific admissions requirements for a particular major and need to fulfill those first
  • You’re seeking a major or degree that UAF does not offer

Why Start in General Studies at UAF?

You may be wondering, “What are general studies?” General studies is an exploratory program that can prepare you for a degree and keeps you focused towards graduation. There isn’t a degree in general studies, but there are several benefits to beginning as an exploratory general studies major.

Faster time to completion

The reality is that students change their major on average two to three times. General studies majors are encouraged to explore degree options while completing general education requirements. This means that they often take fewer classes that don’t count toward their major.

Degree exploration

Beginning at UAF as an exploratory general studies major can be a great way to explore different majors and disciplines without the worry that you’ve chosen one that won’t work for you and your career goals.

Meet faculty

When you select exploratory as your major, you’ll take classes in lots of disciplines. This is a great opportunity to meet and make connections with professors in a wide variety of fields. This can also help you as you decide on which field to commit to since faculty can offer advice and mentorship.

What Can You Do with General Studies?

The purpose of the exploratory studies major is to give you the opportunity to explore degree options at UAF before picking a major. The Academic Advising Center offers comprehensive advising, major exploration and community support to empower you to choose your field of study.

Get Started in the General Studies Program

To get started, apply for admission to UAF and select "Exploratory Studies (Bachelor of Arts)" or "Exploratory Studies (Bachelor of Science)" on your application when you pick your major. Once you've been admitted, you'll connect with your academic advisor at the Academic Advising Center. They'll ask you questions about yourself, your goals and interests, and together you'll make an academic plan that gives you the experiences you'll use to help you pick a final major to finish.

Should I pick the Bachelor's of Arts of Science?

When you apply, you'll need to choose between the Exploratory Studies Bachelor of Arts degree and the Exploratory Studies Bachelor of Science degree.

Exploratory Studies (Bachelor of Arts)

This is a great choice if you don't know what you want your major to be, or if your interests are in liberal arts, including theatre, writing, music, studio arts, photography, language history and more.

Exploratory Studies (Bachelor of Science)

This is a good choice if you think your future major will be in the STEM field, including engineering, statistics, natural resource management, fisheries and more.

Still not sure? UAF Admissions counselors can help you choose, and can answer any questions you have about applying for admission.
