New at UAF ANSEP!

Inupiaq artist Holly Mitiquq Nordlum installs new  ANSEP mural in Duckering, April 2022. 

 

The mural depicts a Yu'pik sea monster as well as kayaks, which are symbolized in the ANSEP logo. Nordlum also illustrated and printed decals of various Alaskan native watercraft that were applied to the sitting area with the help of ANSEP graduate Caitlynn Hanna. 

"Traditional yu'pik watercraft often had family designs not just to identify but also to ward off danger, there is also a story about a sea monster. Some of the stories tell about it on the land and some in the sea... but thinking specifically about this program and how the kids navigate the rough waters of the world."
