Lecture by Dr. Michael Cherlin

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Collaborative Arts Council present a lecture by Dr. Michael Cherlin , Founding Director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Collaborative Arts at the University of Minnesota on Friday, February 20, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Charles Davis Concert Hall, UAF campus.

The lecture will focus on collaborative arts within the university setting and remedying the isolation between various areas of inquiry and modes of creativity, and loss of potential for the kinds of genuine interaction where research and creativity in one discipline stimulates research and creativity in another.

Michael Cherlin received his Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University in 1983. Cherlin has been the recipient of a stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities (2005) and a McKnight Research Award (2006-2009). He was appointed to the faculty of the Mannes Institute for Advanced Studies in Music Theory for summer 2007 and was Endowed Chair in Music at the University of Alabama for the 2007 spring semester. Cherlin was appointed Founding Director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Collaborative Arts in November 2006 at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. “Interdisciplinary studies have long been central and essential to my own approach to scholarship. My graduate training was in music theory and composition, but I realized early on that studying music in a vacuum was not personally satisfying. I remain fascinated by the ways that music interacts with other aspects of human creativity and self-knowing.”
