Driver and Safety Education (2+0)

Drivers Education for the beginning driver. Alaska Driver's Manual, material necessary to gain an Alaska Driver's Permit. Defensive driving methods for accident-free driving and basic mechanical information.


AUTO 081 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrents
Behind-the-Wheel Training (0+3)

Practical driver training in actual situations. Expected student outcome is obtaining a State of Alaska driver's license. (Prerequisite: Must have a valid Alaska Driver's Permit.)


AUTO 100 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrents
Introduction to Small Engine Repair (1+0)

Parts and functions of a small engine and its electrical system. Dismantling procedures, cleaning and reassembly techniques, gasket-making, lubrication, troubleshooting, and minor repairs.


AUTO 101 (4 Credits) Spring
Automotive Systems Fundamentals (3+3)

Prepares the student who possesses no professional automotive repair industry experience for satisfactory completion of the automotive electronics program. Topics include electrical systems, engine design and operation, transmission fundamentals, brake operation and chassis components. Materials fee: $50.00.


AUTO 106 (4 Credits) As Demand Warrents
Auto/Diesel Engine Cooling and Climate Control Systems (3+3)

Theory, diagnostics and repair of motor vehicle A/C, heating, engine cooling and automatic temperature control systems. Covers R-12 and R-143 refrigerant recovery, and related EPA regulations. Materials fee: $50.00. (Prerequisite: AUTO 110 recommended.)


AUTO 107 (4 Credit) As Demand Warrents
Hydraulic Brake and Traction Control Systems (3+3)

Theory, diagnosis and servicing of light- and heavy-duty vehicle hydraulic break and traction control systems. Includes discussion and tasks on disc brakes, drum brakes, power assist systems, and anti-lock/traction controls. Materials fee: $50.00. (Prerequisite: AUTO 110 strongly recommended.)

Suspension, Steering and Wheel Alignment (3+3)

Theory, diagnosis and repair of suspension, steering, and wheel alignment of automobiles and trucks. Materials fee: $50.00.


AUTO 110 (4 Credits) As Demand Warrents
Auto/Diesel Electrical Systems Fundamentals (3+3)

Fundamentals of electrical theory and use in auto/diesel systems. Includes basic AC/DC principles and terms, Ohm's law, multimeter use, wiring diagram use, starting, charging and basic ignition systems. Materials fee: $50.00.


AUTO 111 (4 Credits) As Demand Warrents
Automotive Electronic Systems Fundamentals (3+3)

Theory and diagnostics of systems that use electronic/computerized controls. Emphasis on data communication, diagnostic skills and interpretation of electronic information between vehicle computers and inputs and outputs. Materials fee: $50.00. (Prerequisite: AUTO 110 recommended.)


AUTO 113 (4 Credits) As Demand Warrents
Gasoline Fuel Delivery Systems (3+3)

Basics of carburation and electronic fuel injection. Emphasis on theory, diagnostic/repair skills, inputs and outputs of the PCM, engine performance, use of on-board diagnostic data (OBD II), and special test equipment. Materials fee: $50.00. (Prerequisite: AUTO 110 recommended.)

Auto/Diesel Emission Control Systems (3+3)

Auto/diesel emission system components and performance testing. Emphasis on Federal and Alaska emission standards. Includes discussion of vehicle fuels and lubricants. Materials fee: $50.00. (Prerequisite: AUTO 110 recommended.)

Snowmachine Maintenance and Repair (1+0)

Fundamental skills for operation and repair. Engine tune-up, lubrication, belt and track repair, alignment, and basic problems encountered during operation. Materials fee: $20.00.

Automatic Transmissions and Transaxles (4+3)

Automatic transmissions and transaxles. Includes the operation, diagnosis and repair of planetary gears, clutches, pumps, hydraulic controls and electronic shifting controls. Study and hands-on tasks. Materials fee: $50.00. (Prerequisite: AUTO 110 strongly recommended.)


AUTO 215 (4 Credits) As Demand Warrents
Engine Analyzer, Scopes and Scan Tools (3+3)

Use and interpretation of diagnostic analyzers for spark ignition engines, digital data, fault code and input/output information retrieval, scan tool usage and other diagnostic tools used in the vehicle repair industry. Materials fee: $50.00. (Prerequisite: AUTO 110 recommended.)

The Auto/Diesel Repair Business (2+0)

Overview of business practices common in the vehicle repair industry. Includes flat rate, repair order write-up, customer relations, repair industry related OSHA and EPA regulations, and financing and acquiring a repair business.
