Arctic Survival
Designed for those individuals traveling for work or recreation in the arctic. The focus is on preparation and development of knowledge and skills to cope effectively with the difficulties and dangers to which travelers are frequently exposed. Topics include appropriate survival kits, clothing options, nutrition and hydration needs, shelter construction, signal development, cold weather injuries and safety issues related to modes of transportation. The two credit option includes two field practicums. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credits. (Recommended: College level reading skills.) (1+2) Offered Spring, As Demand Warrants

EMT: Emergency Medical Technician I

ARSK 313 3 Credits
Personal Navigation and Orienteering

Study of navigation to enable students to safely work in an outdoor Arctic environment. Emphasis on use of a topographical map and lensatic compass. Students are enabled to navigate by analyzing terrain, using a compass and satellite positioning systems. Course consists of classroom instruction and practical application in outdoor environments. Note: Students must have adequate clothing to operate for 1-6 hours in an Arctic environment. (2+2) Offered Spring
