Drive Axles (.5+1)
Drive axles for medium to heavy duty commercial and off-road equipment including single speed, two speed and tandem axle systems. Opportunity to troubleshoot and overhaul a differential.
DSLT 122 (1 Credit) Spring
Heavy Duty Drivelines (.5+1)
Heavy duty drive shafts, universal joints, proper lubrication and driveline systems; applications for commercial truck and heavy equipment. Emphasis on Alaska and Arctic use applications. Students will measure, inspect and overhaul a driveline.
DSLT 123 (1 Credit) Fall, Spring
Heavy Duty Braking Systems (.5+1)
Braking systems for commercial trucks and heavy equipment applications; compressor testing and overhaul, brake lining replacement, government regulations, and pneumatic controls; evolving technologies such as antilock brakes. Includes the inspection and overhaul of a commercial truck or heavy equipment braking system.
DSLT 150 (7 Credits) Fall
Diesel Mechanics I (7+0)
Theory and function of the diesel engine. Topics include introduction to various diesel engines, shop tools and instruments for engine disassembly, inspection, assembly, parts failure analysis and shop safety. Materials fee: $125.00.
DSLT 152 (7 Credits) Fall
Diesel Mechanics II (7+0)
A continuation of DSLT 150. Topics include air intake systems, exhaust systems, lube systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, live engine overhaul, tune-up, and troubleshooting of running engines. Materials fee: $125.00. (Prerequisite: DSLT 150.)
DSLT 154 (2 Credits) Fall
Diesel Fuel Injection (.5+1)
Theory and functional operation of all common diesel fuel injection systems including those produced by Bosch, Mack, Cummins, Caterpillar and Detroit diesel. Students will make injection system and governor adjustments on at least two different engines. Materials fee: $10.00.
DSLT 160 (0.5 Credits) Spring
Diesel Engine Emission Control Systems (.5+0)
Evolving technology of diesel emission control systems; government regulations; diesel engine combustion process; emission control devices. Students will become familiar with emission testing procedures on diesel engines. Materials fee: $25.00.
DSLT 201 (2 Credits) Spring
Manual Transmissions and Clutches (1+3)
Two major areas of commercial truck and heavy equipment maintenance and repair; adjustment, inspection and overhaul of common commercial truck and heavy equipment manual transmissions.
DSLT 202 (2 Credits) Spring
Heavy Duty Automatic Transmissions (1+3)
Theory, operation and troubleshooting of heavy duty automatic transmissions; hydraulic, electrohydraulic, pneumatic and electronic controls. Prepares the student to overhaul Allison, ZF and similar automatic transmissions.
DSLT 253 (1.5 Credits) Spring
Electronic Diesel Injection (1+1.5)
Sensors, actuators and diagnostic techniques involved in the maintenance and repair of electronic diesel injection systems. Engine manufacturers covered include Detroit Diesel, Cummins, Caterpillar, and Mack.
DSLT 255 (2 Credits) Spring
Final Drives, Tracked Vehicles (1+2)
Maintenance and repair of the final drive systems of tracked vehicles with emphasis on effects of Alaska's unique climate. Lab work includes the overhaul of a tracked vehicle final drive system.
