Certificate, Degree: A.A.S.

Minimum Requirements for Degrees: 65 credits; Certificate: 30 credits

The Health Technology Division offers an associate of applied science degree (A.A.S.), Medical Assistant. Two certificate programs are also available: Medical/Dental Reception and Phlebotomy and Laboratory Assisting.

The Medical Assistant program prepares students for employment in physicians' offices, medical clinics, and dental facilities. Students receive didactic and clinical training in medical examinations and procedures. The program includes training in theory and skills required for administration and management of medical and dental offices. Students may choose to earn a certificate in medical/dental reception or phlebotomy and laboratory assisting. After graduating with a certificate, the student may elect to complete the Medical Assistant A.A.S. degree requirements. In order to enhance employability, students are encouraged to complete the associate degree or multiple certificate programs.

Undergraduate Degree Requirements

Medical Assistant -- A.A.S. Degree

  1. Complete the following general university and A.A.S. requirements: Credits
    ENGL 111X and ENGL 212* or 213X (6 credits)
    COMM 131X -- Fund. of Oral Comm: Group Context (3 credits)
    Mathematics or Natural Science:
    A math or natural science course at the 100 level or above (3 credits)
    HLTH 106 -- Human Behavior in Health Care (3 credits)
  2. Complete the following major speciality requirements:
    HLTH 105 -- Introduction to Health Careers (2 credits)
    HLTH 114 -- Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology (4 credits)
    HLTH 116 -- Mathematics in Health Care
         or MATH elective at the 100 level or above (3 credits)

  3. Student must demonstrate competence in typing at 55 WPM. This requirement may be satisfied by timed exam demonstrating 55 WPM typing skills or by earning a grade of "B" or above in CIOS 108 -- Keyboarding II/Intermediate Typewriting (3 credits).
  4. Minimum credits required (65 credits)

*ENGL 212 does not fulfill the second half of the written communication requirement for the baccalaureate degree.
