Academic Records, Registration and Graduation -- Registrar's Office

The Registrar's Office provides services to students including registration, academic records support, academic policy interpretation, veterans' certification, degree audits, graduation certification, testing services and transcript processing. Using a sophisticated computerized student information system, registration is enhanced by the use of telephone registration. Timely processing of grades and academic record accuracy and maintenance are greatly enhanced by the student information system. Admissions Office

The Office of Admissions provides services for prospective students, including pre-admissions counseling, tours for prospective students, admissions, evaluation of transfer credit, academic policy interpretation and coordination with the university registrar in determining residency for tuition purposes. Bookstore

The bookstore is operated by the university as a non-profit self-support auxiliary administered by the student service division. Its mission is to support the academic programs of the university by providing books and supplies required for coursework. The bookstore also maintains a wide selection of general reading books, college supplies, UAF clothing and insignia, calculators, personal care items, greeting cards and other merchandise that contributes to the overall experience offered by the university. Center for Health and Counseling

The Center for Health and Counseling offers services in five areas: health care, counseling, disability services, health education and health insurance. Students must pay the health center fee to be eligible for health care and counseling services.

The medical staff provide primary health care and referrals for specialty medical services when appropriate. General office visits for illness and injury are provided at no charge. Physical examinations, medications, laboratory services and medical supplies are provided at reduced cost. Students should call for appointments. Emergency appointments are available when necessary.

The counseling staff offer individual, group and crisis intervention counseling. Counselors, all with graduate-level training, provide assistance with a variety of personal and interpersonal issues. Students are encouraged to schedule appointments. In an emergency, a student is usually seen the same day. The center also provides coordination of services for students with disabilities. Professional staff provide information, health education and referral for individuals and groups seeking to maintain or improve upon physical and mental health.

The Student Health Insurance Program is administered through the center. An insurance coordinator is available to answer questions about policy coverage and to assist with information about how to file claims.

The staff of the Center for Health and Counseling provides consultation, education and crisis intervention on the campus in an effort to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all members of the campus community. Students and staff alike benefit from the presence of the center on the campus, even if they never make personal use of its services.

Disability Services

UAF is committed to equal opportunity for students with disabilities. Students who anticipate needing accommodations at UAF should contact the coordinator as early as possible in the admission process. Services provided include assistance in determining accommodations needed, help with arrangements for special services such as readers, scribes, interpreters, or adaptive equipment and advocacy if needed. Services are free of charge and available to all students with permanent and temporary disabilities, regardless of the number of credits taken.

Curb cuts and ramps have been installed at UAF. Almost all campus buildings contain accessible restroom facilities and elevators. The library and museum are accessible and the swimming pool is equipped with a hydraulic lift. Accessible living accommodations are available. A variety of adaptive equipment and technologies are available at the Center for Health and Counseling and in the center's adaptive technologies laboratory at Rasmuson Library.

Specialized Programs

The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) has selected UAF arctic, circumpolar and cold regions studies as part of the unique or specialized graduate programs it coordinates in the western states as the Western Regional Graduate Programs. Residents of Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming who major in northern studies pay resident tuition at UAF.

Orientation Program

Orientation UAF's goal is to get you off to a great start! This program is offered for all new students who have been accepted to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Whether you are a first-time freshman, a transfer student, a returning adult student, an international student or a graduate student, there will be a variety of programs to address your needs.

The Orientation UAF program includes the following services: shuttle from the airport, early entrance into the residence halls, a parents' orientation program, campus tours, a variety of workshops about campus resources and lots of fun activities where you can meet new people. Testing Services

As a national test center, the UAF Testing Services Office contracts and administers exams and advises UAF students, prospective students and the community on national testing matters for college admissions and placement and career and professional certification. Testing Services also coordinates credit by examination; both local and through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and private proctoring. Veterans' Services

The Veterans' Services Office assists veterans, service members and eligible dependents with paperwork for degree and certificate programs. As a liaison with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the office monitors the academic progress of veterans, in compliance with Title 38, Code of Federal Regulations.

The Veterans Office advises and monitors the educational progress and status of Chapters 30 (New Montgomery GI Bill), 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation), 32 (VEAP), 35 (Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program) and 1606 (selected reserve). If you are qualified and wish to use your VA educational benefits under Chapters 30, 32, 35 and 1606, you must be admitted to a state-approved degree or certificate program. If you want to use Chapter 31 (vocational rehabilitation) benefits, you must meet with the local DVA vocational rehabilitations counselor, who will review, recommend and authorize use of your benefits and forward your paperwork to the UAF's Veterans' Services Office. Questions about using Chapter 31 benefits, or general veterans' information not associated with education, should be directed to the local Veterans' Center, 529 5th Avenue, Suite 102, or call (907) 456-4238.

Because the Department of Veterans' Affairs processes benefit payments as a form of reimbursement, you should initiate your VA paperwork 60-90 days prior to your school start date. The Department of Veterans' offers an advance pay program available through UAF's Veterans' Services Office. Wood Center

Wood Center is the center of campus activities. Its services and facilities are available to all students, faculty, staff, alumni and university guests. Wood Center offers many services: eating facilities; a recreational area featuring bowling, billiards and video games; a laundry room and shower facilities; and darkrooms. Wood Center also provides campus information, lost and found, meeting rooms and recreational equipment rentals.

The Wood Center Pub offers a wide variety of entertainment each evening Monday through Friday, with special events scheduled on various Saturdays. The Pub offers a wide selection of domestic and imported beers, microbrews, fine wines and non-alcoholic beverages (must be 21 to enter). Get acquainted with the Wood Center and make it your leisure-time home! You'll find that it is much more than just a building.
