Distinctions

Excellent for ornamental plantings; bark is the most vividly colored red of all dogwoods especially colorful in the winter landscape; vigorous growth and hardiness; flowers are small clusters of creamy white followed by white or light blue fruits; green leaves turn red purple in autumn; tolerates sun or full shade, wet or dry soils.

Limitations

Prune old stems to keep plant vigorous and for best red twig color; neither species nor cultivars have been successful in Fairbanks.

Cultivars

‘Argenteo-marginata’ white variegated leaves; ‘Aurea’ yellow green leaves turning bright yellow in autumn; ‘Gouchaultii’ yellow and rose colored leaf margins; blood red twigs; ‘Sibirica’ coral red twigs with blue fruit; smaller sized shrub to 6’; best red twig color on current year’s growth.
