Distinctions

Broad shrub that spreads with underground stems; stems are red; 2” clusters of small white flowers; whitish berries; green leaves turn purple red in autumn; very adaptable to soil and climatic conditions including shade and wet soils.

Limitations

White berries are poisonous; requires moist soil; pruning is required to remove oldest canes to keep stem color at its best; can colonize easily; frequently suffers winter dieback in SC; use species in INT, cultivars not successful.
