Distinctions

Horizontal spreading branches; branching similar to a fish skeleton, making an unusual, layered effect; glossy green leaves have brilliant red fall color; can be semi-evergreen in optimum locations; small red fruit persist into winter; full sun to partial shade; prefers well-drained soils; tolerates dry, poor soils and salt.

Limitations

Branching habit tends to collect windblown trash; snow coverage in winter helps hardiness.
