Distinctions

Rounded form with wide-spreading crown; ridged gray bark; clusters of fruit in hairy, sticky case; nuts are edible; leaves are pinnately compound with 11 to 19 leaflets; yellow fall color.

Limitations

Susceptible to canker; roots produce chemical that is toxic to some plants (allelopathic). May not reach this height in Alaska. May die back to shrub form in SC.
