Distinctions

Grayish-green needles with pale midrib; crisp, stiff branches; branches gray, covered with soft reddish down; young cones purple, up to 4" long and may be retained several years; symmetrically shaped tree.

Origin

Southeast Alaska to Oregon, Utah and New Mexico.

Cultivars

var. arizonica -corkbark fir, narrow pyramidal tree; corky, white bark; native to mountains of Arizona. ‘Compacta’ Conical dwarf; silver-blue needles; 6' tall, 3' wide or larger. ‘Glauca’ Upright, conical tree; long, steely blue needles; branches ascend when young and level out with age; indistinguishable from ‘Argentea.’
