Distinctions

Species has irregular, columnar habit; tolerates cold, wet soils but grows well in upland soils; most attractive in its natural environment.

Limitations

Can look sparse and unattractive in a landscape; slow growth.

Origin

Central, interior, and western Alaska and into Canada from the northern limits of trees south to British Columbia, Manitoba, Minnesota and New Jersey.

Cultivars

‘Fastigiata' Narrow columnar form, supposedly grown at Versailles in 1915; 'Golden' broad, upright form; blue-grey needles with yellow cast on top; 10'-25' tall and 10' - 12' wide. See entry under Evergreen Shrubs also.
