Dense, symmetrical, pyramidal form; green needles; cones cylindrical but slightly narrowed at each end; same species as Colorado blue spruce but P. pungens forma glauca selected for blue color.

Large newly planted trees often slow to get established; susceptible to spruce budworm and spider mites; needles sharp to the touch; needles on newly planted trees turn purplish brown when dry and under stress. Does not do well near busy roadways or in southeast Alaska. Green spruce seem less hardy in south central than blue spruce.
