Distinctions

Pyramidal form when young, becoming flat-topped with age; needles in bundles of 5, 1.25"-2.5" long, crowded and forming what looks like tufts at the ends of the branches; persistent brown cones 1.25"-4" long, tolerant of a wide range of soils, including clay loam, but needs good drainage and sun.

Limitations

Limited availability, it may be easier to find cultivars than the species; grown in Sitka, needs more testing in Juneau.
