Distinctions

INVASIVE. Fast growing; salt tolerant; clusters of flowers in spring; purple-black fruits; well branched, flower spikes held up from the branches.

Limitations

INVASIVE. Susceptible to black knot disease; suckers at the base unless grafted onto European bird cherry or Amur chokecherry root stock. Should not be planted as it spreads aggressively and competes with native vegetation.
