Distinctions

Dense pyramidal growth habit; horizontal branching; soft needles; pendulous, 3"-4" cones with unusual forked bracts sticking out of the scales; tolerates pruning and shearing; prefers a moist, well-drained neutral or acidic soil; full sun.

Limitations

Not suited for alkaline soils. There are several large Douglas firs in Juneau, Anchorage, and Mat-Su Valley.

Foothills and high slopes of the Rocky Mountains, Pacific coast, British Columbia to Mexico, China and Japan.

var. glauca Inland form from northern part of its range; blue needle color; considered hardier than coastal variety below; good in protected sites in south-central.; var. menziesii Coastal variety; yellow green needle color (Zone 6)
