Distinctions

Low spreading shrub, often rooting along the stem; inconspicuous maroon flowers appear very early in the spring; glossy, red, edible fruits in early fall; self-fertile; plant in full sun or part shade.

Limitations

Looks best with rejuvenation pruning; needs good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew; imported currant worm, a sawfly larvae, can rapidly defoliate the entire plant.
