Distinctions

Lustrous, dark-green, needle-like, evergreen foliage; fleshy single-seeded red berry in the fall; Tolerates pruning; used as a hedge at the Governor's Mansion in Juneau; grows on acidic and alkaline soils; prefers a moist, well-drained sandy loam; sun or shade.

Limitations

Subject to wind burn and spider mites; needs well-drained soil; fruits are poisonous to eat.

Europe, North Africa and the Caucasus Mountains.

Cultivars

‘Dovastoniana’ Westfelton yew; upright in habit with horizontal branches and dark green foliage. ‘Erecta’ Broom yew; upright in habit, much wider than Irish yew. ‘Fastigiata’ Irish yew; rigidly columnar and upright in habit;15'-30' high and 4'-8' wide; one of the most picturesque cultivars.
