Distinctions

Multi-stemmed large shrub or small tree; white 2”-4” flowering racemes in early May; edible, purple to black berries July-September; birds like berries; green rounded pubescent leaves changing to yellow, orange, and red in autumn; smooth ornamental gray bark; grows in full sun or light shade; grows in moist acid soils but adapts to dry soils.

Limitations

Can be a host for apple (serviceberry)/cedar rust; susceptible to leaf spot.
