Distinctions

Upright shrub; clusters of snow-white 2” long flowering racemes appear before leaves; edible, small, fruit changing to maroon-purple when ripe; showy yellow to golden with orange autumn colors; grows in wet or boggy soils but tolerates drier soils; full sun to partial shade.

Limitations

Spreads freely forming thickets; prefers consistently moist and well-drained soils; fruit is the least sweet of Amelanchiers; can be a host for apple (serviceberry)/cedar rust; susceptible to leaf spot.
