Distinctions

Single stemmed or multi-stemmed; white peeling bark; golden-yellow fall color; year around ornamental interest; graceful habit; prefers moist, well-drained acidic soil; tolerates a wide range of sandy loamy soils; used for syrup making.

Limitations

Subject to pathogens and insects, especially aphids; but permanent damage is rare. Black mold grows on aphid honeydew and can coat everything below trees during high aphid years.
