Distinctions

Form of young tree is dense pyramid, mature tree may remain pyramidal or become wide-spreading; shaggy brown bark; new leaves reddish purple, mature leaves bluish green, outstanding fall color of yellow, apricot and orange; autumn leaves smell like burnt sugar.

Limitations

Branches can be broken by snow; wrap trunk in winter to prevent bark split on young trees; porcupines like twigs.
