Friday Focus: Let go and let be

During a daily phone conversation with my mother, who lives in India, she remarked, "It is hot like in summers. It feels like spring is long gone." I looked out of my window, and snowflakes were coming down. In Alaska, seasons have a whole different meaning. Here, I can still talk about the idea of welcoming spring for a long time! Last month, students of the UAF Namaste India club organized a free-for-all event to celebrate Holi - the exuberant festival of colors that marks the beginning of spring in India. A group of 50 or so students, faculty, staff, and community members of all ages came together on a Saturday morning to be a part of this joyous festival that celebrates the diversity of our communities. Arctic Innovation Competition awards to be presented April 20

The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Business and Security Management will host the annual Arctic Innovation Competition finals and award ceremony at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel on Saturday, April 20, from 1-5 p.m. Learn more about the event.


Students encouraged to submit FAFSA by April 30

Students are encouraged to submit their FAFSA applications before the end of April so the UAF Financial Aid Office can get their aid offers sent for the 2024-2025 year in May. The university's financial aid advisors are available to provide guidance and support to students as they navigate the financial aid process. Read more on support completing the FAFSA.

Huge database gives insight into salmon patterns at sea

A massive new analysis of high seas salmon surveys is enhancing the understanding of salmon ecology, adding details about where various species congregate in the North Pacific Ocean and their different temperature tolerances. Learn more about the database and analysis.


Summer Sessions: Day camps for adults

This year Summer Sessions not only is offering 88 children's day camps but we also will have summer camps for adults. These camps are designed for individuals who would like to have fun learning this summer. Read more and register for the day camps.


Reminder: UAF Troth Yeddha' Campus steam outage planned

Annually, the Facilities Services Division of Utilities performs preventative maintenance and repair work on the power plant and the utilidor system. Starting on May 5, steam from the power plant will be shut off to the entirety of the Troth Yeddha' Campus for two weeks. Steam will return to service around May 19. Stewardship of our utility investments is critical to maintain a high level of reliability in delivering power and heat to the campus. Read more about the about the outage.

The organizing committee for the 2024 Staff Recognition and Development Day would like your feedback. Everyone is encouraged to take the survey, whether or not they participated. We will use this feedback to make next year's event even better! The survey will close Wednesday, April 24.

Food preservation workshops scheduled for Yakutat

Three days of workshops with sessions covering water bath and pressure canning, pickling and fermenting vegetables, and making fruit leather are scheduled for April 25-27 in Yakutat. Read more about the workshops and register.


New for fall 2024 UAF Bookstore Bundle

UAF is making it more affordable and convenient for students access their required course materials with the launch of the UAF Bookstore Bundle program. Starting in fall 2024, students will have the option to rent all required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes, digital materials and electronic books for a flat fee of $20 per credit hour. This charge is automatically applied to their student account upon registering for classes. Students who prefer not to participate will have the option opt-out of the program and continue to purchase their course materials on their own. Learn more about the new bundle.
