A glaciologist once wrote that the number of glaciers in Alaska "is estimated at (greater than) 100,000." That fuzzy number, perhaps written in passive voice for a reason, might be correct. But it depends upon how you count. Learn more about how glaciers are counted.


'23 Mendenhall Glacial Lake outburst flood

Join us Apr. 23 at 11 a.m. for this month’s VAWS webinar to learn about glacial dammed lakes in Alaska and how they present a unique hazard to downstream communities due to the uncertainty of lakes filling and catastrophically releasing. A glacial lake outburst flood in 2023 resulted in record water levels on the Mendenhall River with both major flooding and significant erosion. An overview of the area, monitoring efforts, and understanding of these events will be presented with plans for future monitoring and reporting. Learn more and register for the webinar.


Denim Day: Sexual Assault Awareness Month crafting event

Since the 1990s, Denim Day has advocated for sexual violence prevention. Denim Day advocates that "there is no excuse and never an invitation to rape" and encourages people worldwide to wear denim in solidarity with this statement. ORCA POD will be hosting a denim-based craft project in the Wood Center on Wednesday, Apr. 24 from noon to 2 p.m. Learn more about the event.

Birch Dinner hosted by OneTree Alaska and Sustainability

The UAF Office of Sustainability and OneTree Alaska will host a birch-themed dinner experience in The Pub on Tuesday, April 30 at 5 p.m. The menu will explore the versatility of birch syrup and all of the birch syrup integrated into the meal is produced on the UAF Troth Yeddha' campus in the OneTree STEAM Studio.
