$1,000 grants available to student groups

Student groups and campus organizations can apply for a grant of up to $1,000 from the UAF Alumni Association. The funds will support projects that identify specific needs and improve campus opportunities for current students. The application deadline is Oct. 14. If you are a student or work with a student organization, you are invited to make a request through the UAFAA Benefactor Fund form. Last year, UAFAA awarded more than $13,000 to 14 student organizations. Many of the awards supported community and connectivity among students, as well as outreach.


3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Workshop Series

A series of workshops is available both in-person and online for students to develop and practice their presentation and story-telling skills for this year's competition.

  • Sept. 29: Visualizing your research story

  • Oct. 6: It’s all about delivery via zoom

  • Oct. 13: Mock trials and feedback

One-on-one with the Speaking Center coaches (schedule anytime)

UA Safe Title IX training due by Oct. 31

The university provides tools to assist you in knowing what to do when you become aware of difficult situations, including sexual harassment or assault, through Title IX training and online resources. UA Safe Title IX Training is mandatory, and must be completed by Oct. 31, 2022.


URSA announces fall 2022 student project awardees

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity (URSA) congratulates students who were awarded a Fall 2022 Student Project Award. URSA Student Project Awards support undergraduates of all disciplines to pursue research and creative activity projects at UAF. For more information on this semester’s student projects, visit the URSA Award Recipients webpage. Spring 2023 Student Project Award applications will open Oct. 3, 2022 and close Nov. 6, 2022.

On St. Paul Island, in the Bering Sea about 300 miles from Alaska’s coast, the still-powerful remains of Typhoon Merbok passed overhead, churning up the ocean and rolling across the landscape on a path to the Alaska mainland. As the storm hit the small island, three University of Alaska Fairbanks researchers, two graduate students and a filmmaker went out for a look.

  • Deadline to apply for spring semester admission (for undergraduate students)    (Nov. 1)

  • Last day for student- and faculty-initiated withdrawals (W grade appears on academic transcript) (Nov. 4)

Convocation, Sept. 29

Please join me Thursday, Sept. 29 at 1:15 p.m. in the Davis Concert Hall for 2022 Convocation. The annual event welcomes faculty, staff and students back to UAF for a new academic year each fall, and is a celebration of the university's people and accomplishments over the past year. T-shirts and ice cream will also be available at the event.
