UAF Writing Center

The Writing Center is a student-staffed tutoring service focused on building the writing skills of the UAF learning community. We are still assisting student writers during the COVID-19 response, although we've moved our services to virtual formats due to the constraints of social distancing. Using the calendar and form below, you can schedule a meeting with a Writing Center tutor over the phone, Google Hangouts or Zoom.

In the appointment calendar below, text boxes indicate available tutoring slots. You can select a specific tutor and time using the "Schedule an Appointment" form. That form will also request your contact and assignment information so our tutors can arrange the session. You can view our tutor profiles and their conferencing availability using the button below.

Our tutors include English Department teaching assistants and a few outstanding undergraduate students. We collaborate with each student on a one-to-one basis, and we will work with students at any phase of the writing process—planning, drafting and revising. We can also help writers discover ways of improving grammar, mechanics, and punctuation.

Although our physical space (Gruening 801) is closed during the univerisity's COVID-19 response, the Writing Center typically features a computer lab with fourteen PCs available on a walk-in basis. Technicians and tutors are on hand to assist with computer-related questions. There is no charge for printing (up to 25 pages). Students can also peruse a full range of dictionaries, handbook and, thesauruses. And the Writing Center is more than just a study resource: it also features artwork from Eric Alain Parker (MFA, '15).

In-person tutorials, although currently suspended, are usually 30 minutes long. While walk-in sessions are often available, we encourage you to schedule an appointment ahead of time, especially during the later part of the semester. Our tutors can assist you in all phases of the writing process, including the following:

  • Brainstorming and generating topics
  • Organizing ideas
  • Developing research strategies
  • Use of citation styles—MLA, APA, and Chicago
  • Editing for clarity and correctness
