Department of Psychology
SHOULD I CHOOSE BA or a BS degree?
Our department offers both a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) or a Bachelor of Science degree (BS). The psychology major requirements are the same. Both degrees emphasize oral and written communication skills as well as critical thinking. The BA is a liberal arts degree that requires you to choose a minor and take at least two humanities classes.
The BS degree emphasizes mathematics and science. It is especially helpful for those applying to graduate schools which require a solid science background (ex. medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, etc.) However, the BA degree can also be supplemented with selected science and mathematics prerequisites. Neither degree is “better” than the other. If you are unsure, consult with the Undergraduate Advisor to discuss which choice is right for you.
CAN I GET A PSYCHOLOGY DEGREE BY DISTANCE?
YES. We are offering a BA degree by distance. Individual classes can be taken on-line. Students will need to contact the Undergraduate Advisor to review their particular situation. Not all classes are offered each semester!
WHO IS MY ACADEMIC ADVISOR ?
Andrea Greenberg is the Undergraduate Advisor for the Department of Psychology. She will assist you with academic advising, course planning, degree and program requirements, petitions, as well as university deadlines, policies and procedures. She can also help you find support resources, alternative ways to earn credit, or plan for international or national exchange programs. She will interpret your placement scores for mandatory English or Math classes.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I SEE MY ADVISOR?
You are required to consult with your advisor before you can register each semester.
You will not be able to register until your advisor unlocks your account. The purpose is to keep you on track to graduation in a timely manner. However, you can visit your advisor whenever you want to discuss your academic program, need an advisor’s signature, file a petition, require clarification about UAF policies or procedures, or want some moral support.
