Have questions about the Toolik environment.
Curious about what time of year the Aurora will be out? What about when has it snowed at Toolik? When does the lake get warmer than the air? Or how about which weeks of the year do we typically have clear skies? Use our infographic Through the year at Toolik to explore.

Check out our EDC guides to the animals and plants of Toolik! Guides to the mammals and birds represent all of the species that have been seen in
and around Toolik by our Naturalist. In addition to learning about the species you
can also see when they are typically spotted and the calls of the birds. The Fish
Guide shows examples of fish that are found in Toolik lake as well as nearby streams
and rivers. The plant guide is an interactive key to identify species by their common
features when you are slogging through the tundra. The virtual herbarium has at
least one voucher per species and is extremely useful in getting a better sense of
each species. We will be continuing to update and add to all of our guides as new
species are spotted in the Toolik area. Let us know if you have found something that we do not currently list!
News & Announcements
Pre-travel COVID requirements have ended
Travelers to the station are no longer required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or show proof of negative test results. Additionally, station residents no longer need to test at the station, unless they show symptoms of an illness, contract COVID-19, or are in close contact with someone who has contracted COVID-19.
Travelers must still report to TFS Safety if they are symptomatic of a communicable illness within a week of departure. Those who display symptoms of illness may be delayed on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, those who have been in close contact with someone who has a confirmed communicable illness may be subject to additional testing requirements and distancing procedures.
Communicable illnesses at the station
Residents may be required to isolate in their rooms if they test positive or are confirmed to have a communicable illness of concern and be monitored until cleared by the on-site EMT. Managers will attempt to relocate roommates, but this may not always be possible, depending on the population level.
