Are you interested in hydrogen energy but haven’t been able to attend the Alaska Hydrogen Working Group meetings? Recordings can be accessed on ACEP’s YouTube channel. These monthly virtual meetings feature hydrogen-related news, open discussion, guest presentations, and committee updates such as the development of an Alaska hydrogen state roadmap.

June’s monthly meeting featured a presentation by Evan Gray of Griffith University, Australia. Gray leads the Offshore Renewable Energy Systems research program in the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre and is heavily involved in the CRC's activities related to hydrogen microgrids, including a bench-scale DC microgrid at Griffith University and the demonstration project in Hobart, Tasmania with a 700-kW electrolyzer that will supply hydrogen for fuel-cell buses.

The presentation provided an overview of hydrogen-focused research by the Blue Economy CRC Offshore Renewable Energy Systems research program, including the hydrogen microgrid currently being developed in Hobart before taken offshore, and a study of the requirement for operating maritime vessels on hydrogen in Australian waters.

Following a summer hiatus, the Alaska Hydrogen Working Group monthly meetings will resume on Tuesday, September 5. Mariya Koleva, a National Renewable Energy Laboratory chemical engineer at the Energy Conversion and Storage Systems Center, will present, “Techno-economic analysis of renewable hydrogen systems in Alaska.”

The working group, co-facilitated by ACEP and the U.S. Department of Energy Arctic Energy Office, is an informal group of stakeholders interested in following developments related to hydrogen and hydrogen carrier technologies, and provides input related to proposed usage and future deployment in the state.
