4/17/21 Flute Concert: Solo and Ensemble Works Spring 2021
The UAF Flute Studio hosts their Flute Ensemble Concert on Saturday April, 17 at 4pm in the Davis Concert Hall. A broad range of music will be presented - quartets and solos— including an arrangement of Debussy’s Arabesques, selections from “Carmen,” A very contemporary “Zig, Zag Zoo,” and three solos for flute and piano. The event can be viewed live on the UAF Music Department Facebook Page. Five different students will be performing. This is the first in person indoor concert of flutes in over a year. We’re very excited and we hope our listeners will be too!
This ensemble , the UAF Flute quartet, is a subset of the much larger Fairbanks Flutists — due to the pandemic there isn’t much room on stage for socially distanced fluting. The ensembles from the UAF flute studio have been playing at many university events over the years including commencement activities, This is CLA, scholarship breakfasts, UAF in North Pole, and Inside Out — in addition to music department recitals and functions.
UAF offers a wide range of flute instruction and experiences for flutists of all levels
and interests from music career-oriented students to those who wish to keep up their
skills and enjoy playing as a music minor or non-degree student. Class and private
lessons, as well as ensembles, are available through UAF. There are many playing opportunities
on campus and in the greater Fairbanks community including the UAF Wind Symphony,
Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, Fairbanks Flutists, light opera pit orchestras, churches,
and summer festival groups. Weekly solo and small ensemble recitals are held in the
Davis Concert Hall with its exceptional acoustics. Degrees are available in performance
and education, and many flute graduates have gone to successful careers in both.
Meet Flute Instructor, Dorli McWayne!
Dorli McWayne has been principal flutist of the Fairbanks Symphony and Arctic Chamber Orchestras since 1974 and a member of the UAF Music Department faculty since 1981. She has been very involved in the performing arts community in Fairbanks as the director of the Fairbanks Flutists, founded in 1981; and as a performer with the Aurora Chamber Players, the Northwind Trio, Chinook Winds, the Fairbanks Light Opera Theater, and the Western Opera Company. In addition to her University responsibilities, Ms. McWayne has coordinated master classes with flutists from the United States and Europe for the Fairbanks Symphony, the Fairbanks Concert Association, and the Summer Arts Festival. She has been on the faculty of the Fairbanks Summer Fine Arts Camp and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, and has maintained a private flute studio in Fairbanks for over 25 years. She is currently serving as the NFA's Flute Choirs Coordinator. As an arranger, Ms. McWayne is represented by ALRY Publications; her arrangement of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" was performed by 200 flutists at the convocation of the 2003 National Flute Convention in Las Vegas. Her other interests include gardening under the midnight sun and running (year-round in sun or snow).
The UAF Music Department
The UAF Department of Music strives to prepare its students for 21st century musical careers by providing a rigorous coursework curriculum and opportunities for a variety of musical experiences and numerous community partnerships. The UAF Music Department is a cultural hub of Fairbanks and by extension the rest of Alaska. It provides graduating students with performance and educational skills in preparation for the workforce in Alaska and beyond, as well as a broad skill-set of knowledge to meet the needs of an ever-changing world. Graduates of our program go on to diverse careers in music, or continue their studies in graduate programs in the United States and internationally.
The Department of Music has three distinct degree programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music in Performance and Bachelor of Music in Education, each with its own specialized focus. Starting your first year, you’ll gain valuable performance experience through a variety of large and small ensembles, workshops with guest artists, apprentice programs, master classes and state and national competitions. You can also specialize your degree to explore and shape your particular musical interests and career paths.
Each degree path stresses the importance of instilling a lifelong commitment to learning, creating music research opportunities that generate new artistic knowledge and insights as well as new perspectives on traditional knowledge. Part of this approach involves an understanding of non-Western frameworks of knowledge as cultivated in Alaskan indigenous musical culture and neighboring regions. Students are trained to engage the public as musical ambassadors in Fairbanks and other communities around Alaska and beyond.
