Friday Focus: Innovation in Nanooks Athletics

One of the most frequently asked questions around the NCAA is "What's the deal with Name, Image, and Likeness?" Most notably for us at UAF has extended to, "What are the Nanooks doing to stay relevant and competitive in the world of NIL?" These sound like simple questions, which they are, but they can often have complex answers. My goal for you in this week's Friday Focus is to provide clarity regarding our path forward and provide a quick dive into what our Alaska Nanooks have for opportunities. Surprising genetic differences found in Iliamna Lake harbor seals

In Alaska, harbor seals thrive in the chilled water of Iliamna Lake, sliding their blubbery bodies onto floating pieces of ice for a winter rest. This group of round-eyed water dwellers has remained a mystery for years, but now, in partnership with local Indigenous communities, scientists have found surprising genetic differences in the seals. UAF Wear Purple Day for survivors of domestic violence

Join ORCA and UAF friends in recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October. You can show your support for survivors by wearing purple throughout October. ORCA will also be hosting Purple Day on Tuesday, Oct. 22 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Wood Center Multi-Level Lounge. Read more on DVAM and how you can support victims of domestic violence.

Webinar highlights Alaska-grown winter squash, pumpkins

Learn about the many different kinds of cucurbits such as squash and pumpkins that can be grown in Alaska during a free statewide webinar. Glenna Gannon, University of Alaska Fairbanks assistant professor of sustainable food systems with the Agriculture and Forestry Experiment Stations in Fairbanks and Palmer, will focus on the cultivars of winter squash and pumpkins evaluated in the Alaska Variety Trials program.
