On Monday morning, during some of the worst of the weather in a while, Vice Chancellor
Guthrie and I walked to the Wood Center as part of our walk and talk. It was striking
to see how many people were on campus, doing what needed to be done to keep UAF running.
VC Guthrie and I could walk across campus because there they were; facilities crews
out scooping, shoveling, plowing, and sanding. A big shout out to all of the grounds
crew, facilities crews, power plant operators and everyone else who showed up in person
and on time to UAF facilities services! And thank you to all the UAF employees who
did their part this week, either on campus or working remotely, your work is seen
and appreciated. I’ve had several meetings this week to discuss how to handle the
inclement weather. These conversations reminded me how important it is to have a team
of people doing their part. Continue reading this week's Friday Focus.

On Friday, Oct. 25 from 3-5 p.m., Dozandri Mendoza will explain via a Zoom session their linguistic and semiotic anthropological work in the Puerto Rican Ballroom scene,
explaining how vogue styles become recognizable and (re)performable by different members
of the performance circuit through intimate kinship ties. Their work will highlight
the importance of participatory ethnographic practice and centering the fabulosity
and creative capacity of trans Latinx life. Read more and register to attend.

A panel discussion/lunch centered around how to support students is scheduled for
Tuesday, Oct. 29 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Murie Auditorium. This used to take place
during New Faculty Orientation, but it was so large, the Faculty Accelerator Team
felt a separate session could ensure new faculty get the attention they deserved.
