Convocation, Sept. 29

Please join me Thursday, Sept. 29 at 1:15 p.m. in the Davis Concert Hall for 2022 Convocation. The annual event welcomes faculty, staff and students back to UAF for a new academic year each fall, and is a celebration of the university's people and accomplishments over the past year. T-shirts and ice cream will also be available at the event.


FAFSA opens on Oct. 1

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens Oct. 1. This is for the 2023-24 school year, which includes fall 2023 and spring 2024. Those who plan to attend should fill out the form to see what they qualify for. Apply at the FAFSA website.


3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Workshop Series

A series of workshops is available both in-person and online for students to develop and practice their presentation and story-telling skills for this year's competition.

BLaST Undergraduate Prof Dev Workshop: "Acing your Abstracts"

Join BLaST in a workshop on Oct. 4 from 1-2 p.m. in the Arctic Health Research Building Room 174 and via Zoom to demystify abstracts, offer tips, and help you construct your abstract for a scientific conference. This will be especially helpful for students planning to submit an abstract to the One Health, One Future 2023 conference! New and current BLaST Scholars and URISE students are encouraged to attend, as are all undergraduates interested in research. URSA 2022 CEL Award open for applications

The URSA 2022 Community Engaged Learning (CEL) Award are open for applications as of Sept. 26, 2022. CEL awards offer up to $500 to work with a community partner to explore a community need or problem through research or scholarly activity. Visit the URSA website to learn more about this opportunity and submit applications. The deadline to apply is Oct. 16.

Permafrost Magazine releases Issue 44.1

Permafrost, Issue 44.1, has been released and is now live at the Permafrost website! This issue features 38 creators of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, hybrid, and visual art.

Alaska Native Language Center to celebrate 50th anniversary on Oct. 4

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska Native Language Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Tuesday, Oct. 4. A celebration will be held in the UAF Wood Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to the public. It will be a celebration of Alaska Native languages and will feature panels on language revitalization, language workshops, dance performances and more.To RSVP for the event and learn more, visit the ANLC website.

BLaST celebrates September Scientist of the Month

Since 2016, the Biomedical Learning and Student Training (BLaST) program at UAF has highlighted scientists from all biomedical fields through its Scientist of the Month articles. UAF BLaST Scholar Orlin Gologergen was selected as the BLaST Scientist of the Month.


Launch of Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act Project Jukebox

In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) in December 1971, the UAF Oral History Program launched the Project Jukebox online interactive website that combines oral history recordings, film, documents and photos to tell the story behind the fight for ANCSA's passage, its role in Alaska's history, and its legacy.

Student Health and Counseling launches winter wellness program

The Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) wants to help you prepare for the upcoming winter so that you can enjoy your time in Fairbanks while avoiding the "winter blues." SHCC has come up with an eight-week preparedness program dedicated to helping students plan for the potential emotional and social hardships that can come with the colder and darker months. Beginning Sept. 30, students can stop by the Winter Wellness table in MBS every Friday from 12-2 p.m. to complete a Winter Wellness activity and enter to win prizes, and participate in giveaways from community partners.
