FAQ

Can I visit LARS?

Yes! During the summer (End of May through September), we have daily tours at 10, 12, and 2. For groups smaller than 10, no reservations are required.  If you have a larger tour group, email uaf-lars-tours@alaska.edu to discuss a time and date that will work for us both.

During the winter, private and behind the scenes tours are available, but must be scheduled 2 weeks in advance. See our tour page for more information.

Why aren't you open in the winter time?

We do offer tours in a limited capacity in winter.  Tours depend on staffing, weather, and projects occurring at the research station.  Sometimes it is not possible or safe for us to have the public visit LARS due to animals being moved around, the barn being in use, or the conduction of research projects.  Additionally, we do not have much large heated space into which we can welcome guests on cold days.

Can I still see animals if I cannot attend a tour?

Yes, sometimes! If you drive to our location (2220 Yankovich Road) you can sometimes see muskoxen from our parking area. Additionally, if we have wood bison on site, they are often to the east of our driveway, to the right of the parking area, across the driveway if facing the farm.  You can follow the Skarland Trail along the fenceline of this pen and sometimes see wood bison or reindeer.  The trail is groomed for walking and skiing in the winter time.

In the summer we do have a picnic area and the parking area is open to the general public.

Where is LARS located?

We are located at 2220 Yankovich Road Fairbanks, AK 99709, just north of the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus on Yankovich Road.

Can I pet the animals?

No, we are a research facility and have strict guidelines that we have to abide by to ensure the health and safety of our animals.
