On July 5, 2023, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation awarded the University of Alaska Fairbanks water treatment facility Ursa Major status in Water System Excellence for the operating year 2022. This status indicates that our water treatment operators, Mike Rego, Jim Hocking and Jereme Granger demonstrated stellar compliance with both Drinking Water and Operator Certification Programs. This award also exemplifies the hard work and diligence of our water treatment technicians to provide safe drinking water to the university.

The Water Systems Excellence Award is a coordinated effort between ADEC’s Drinking Water Program and Operator Certification Program to recognize exceptional performance. Drinking water systems are evaluated for their efforts during the award year and recognized in one of two tiers: Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Our system received the Ursa Major award by maintaining four quarters of Operator Certification compliance and have no open, unresolved, or incurred Drinking Water violations during the award year.
