In 2011, a group of UAF alumni and friends established the LGBT Friends and Allies Scholarship. This UAF scholarship is the only one of its kind in the University of Alaska system.

On June 28, 1969, the New York Police Department raided the Stonewall Inn, a New York City gay bar. The patrons of Stonewall Inn fought back, catalyzing the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The next year, marches in multiple cities commemorated the Stonewall Uprising.
