Guest Lecturer to Speak on Academic Freedom

Dr. Mary Burgan, general secretary for the American Association of University Professors, will give a speech concerning academic freedom on Oct. 4, 2002. Burgan will address current threats to academic freedom. The speech will take place in the Wood Center multi-level lounge at 3 p.m. A question and answer period and reception will follow.

In addition to her position with the American Association of University Professors, Burgan is an adjunct professor of English at Indiana University where she has taught since 1964. During her time at IU, Burgan has served as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Chair of the English department, and an elected leader of the Bloomington and University Faculty Counsel. Her publications include numerous articles, reviews, and lectures ranging in topic from nineteenth-century English and American literature to professional issues stemming from her experiences as department chair, working with disciplinary organizations, and her position as general secretary.
