The deadline for submission of papers is 5:00 p.m. (Alaska Standard Time) on Monday, 25 November 2002.

Dear Colleague:

In keeping with the ARCUS mission to promote arctic research and education, the ARCUS Board of Directors announces the Seventh Annual ARCUS Award for Arctic Research Excellence competition. This year’s student competition will be judged in four broad categories: Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Sciences, with up to four awards given. Papers may address any research topic related to the Arctic.

Contestants must be registered as an undergraduate or graduate student within one year of 9 December 2002 and must be the primary or sole author of the paper and a major contributor to the research. Students should notify ARCUS by Monday, 21 October 2002 via an on-line form or by e-mail of their intent to submit a paper. Papers need to be submitted directly to ARCUS by Monday, 25 November 2002. In an effort to streamline the entry process, students will have the option to submit their papers electronically. The review panel will include prominent arctic researchers from around the world and from various fields. The winners of the "award for excellence" will have the added experience of presenting their work to a broad-based audience during the Arctic Forum at the ARCUS 15th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. in May 2003. Abstracts of the winning papers will be published on the ARCUS web site as well. Previous winners have found this exposure to be stimulating and career enhancing.

We encourage you to spread the word about the Seventh Annual ARCUS Award competition to students in all disciplines who may be interested in this opportunity to gain international recognition, present their research at a significant assembly on arctic research, and receive a $500 cash award.
