UAF Sigma Xi Research Society Receives Certificate of Excellence

The Alaska Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has received the Certificate of Excellence and Chapter Program Award for outstanding chapter activity during the year ending June 30, 2002.
The Certificate of Excellence is awarded for exceptional activity and programs particularly those that address honor in science and engineering, science education, science policy, and the public understanding of science. The Alaska Chapter also received the Certificate of Excellence in 2000.
Chapter Program Awards are given to chapters that held an outstanding program in the past year, especially a program that other chapters can emulate.
John Kelley, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, the Alaska Chapter secretary - treasurer, has been elected as the associate regional director for the northwest region and serves on the Sigma Xi committee, which nominates the president and president - elect. He also serves as a mentor to the first Sigma Xi chapter recently established in Moscow, Russia
Sigma Xi is an international honor society for science and engineering with approximately 75,000 members whose membership is based on their research potential or achievements. The Alaska Chapter office at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and serves the entire state of Alaska. Eric Rexstad, biology and wildlife department, is president of the Alaska Chapter.
