The recipient of this year’s Provost’s Prize is Julia Ann Walker from Anvik, Alaska. Walker began her student career at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1982 when she joined the XCED program, beginning her quest to become a classroom teacher. She has enrolled in at least one distance education course almost every semester in order to complete her teacher certification. This translates to literally thousands of hours that she has spent on the telephone after work and in the evening participating in audio conference classes. She did her student teaching in Holy Cross and she will graduate this May with an overall GPA of 3.54. She has a teaching contract to teach in her home village of Anvik beginning next fall.

Walker has dedicated herself over the last 20 years to earning her teacher certification, all the while working full-time and raising a family with her husband Robert. They have four children and three grandchildren.

The Provost will present Julia with her award and certificate later this fall.
