As part of the Inland Northwest Research Alliance’s Subsurface Science Graduate Program (SSGP), the Graduate School is offering Ph.D. Fellowships in the topic area of subsurface science.

The Subsurface Science Graduate Program is part of the Inland Northwest Research Alliance’s Subsurface Science Research Institute (SSRI). The SSGP is designed to support the subsurface science emphasis of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). Additional information about the SSRI can be found at www.inra.org/.

The annual fellowship stipend is $25,000 for up to two years. These fellowships will be awarded about June 30 and will begin about August 22, 2004. Applicants must be conducting research focused on subsurface science. Possible research areas include: subsurface contaminant transport, groundwater hydrology, geochemistry, subsurface biological activity, and multiphase fluid flow. A more detailed list and description of subsurface science funded under this fellowship can be found at ssgp.boisestate.edu/Default.htm

Recipients of the fellowships will be required to take two courses on subsurface science (one course offered in the fall term and the other in the spring term). These courses are taught via the internet. Please refer to ssgp.boisestate.edu/Default.htm for information about these courses.

Recipients will also be reviewed annually to monitor progress. To apply for this fellowship applicants must describe in one page or less their research topic and identify how their research relates to the goals of the SSGP. A recommendation letter from the applicant’s major professor, the major professor’s curriculum vita (short version) and a 1-page description of the major professor’s research program as it applies to subsurface science is also required. The major professor should also identify the number of fellowship years the student will require (up to two years). Please turn all applications into the Graduate School by June 18, 2004.
