Domenica Curran, a four-year basketball standout and former assistant coach at Sonoma State University, has been hired as the new women’s assistant basketball coach at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. UAF head coach Lynne Andrew made the announcement.

"George Cromer was our interim assistant coach last season and I was very fortunate to work with him and valued his generous knowledge of the community and UAF. Now that we take the next step in building our program, I am very happy to have Domenica come aboard" said Andrew. Domenica is a bright young coach and has a tremendous future ahead of her. She’s very energetic and really wants to succeed. That’s very important for a program on the rise like ours."

"I am looking forward to joining Coach Andrew at UAF and can’t wait to get to work," said Curran. "I had heard a lot about the UAF women’s program and was very impressed with what they were doing. It’s time for me to make a move to learn some new things."

One of the top prep players in California at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Curran went on to a standout career with Sonoma State University. She was a four-year starter and finished her career with 963 points and 616 rebounds, good enough for fourth and third, respectively, on the Sonoma State all-time career list. Curran’s top season as a player was her junior campaign when she averaged 11.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while leading her team to a 21-8 overall record and a berth in the NCAA tournament. She was also named second-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association and All-Western Region.

After graduation, Curran stayed at SSU as the first assistant coach and helped Sonoma State to a 17-10 overall record and another appearance in the Division II Western Regional Tournament.

"Domenica is very knowledgeable with the West Region and understands what it takes to get to the West Regional Tournament, which is one of our goals here," said Andrew. "She is also very well connected in California and that will help us with recruiting and scheduling. The addition of Domenica is a big step forward for this program."

Curran feels the same way. "I am excited," she said. "I plan on being involved in everything about the program. I want to learn more about recruiting, scheduling and player development. I am really looking forward to moving to Fairbanks."

Andrew said that Curran will join her on the recruiting trail in July and should start her work in Fairbanks sometime in August.

The Nanooks went 10-16 in the 2003-04 season, posting the most victories in a season over the last three years. Junior Adrienne Taalak led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and was named first-team All-GNAC.
