University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service Director Tony Nakazawa has named Jay Moore land resources agent for the Extension Indian Reservation Program administered through Tanana Chiefs Conference.

"Through close consultation with TCC and with input from the Indian Extension Advisory Committee, I look forward to Moore continuing to serve the educational and technical assistance needs of rural Native Alaskans," Nakazawa said. "Moore’s vast knowledge of and experience in horticulture is greatly needed in those communities."

The position will serve primarily as an information and referral source while improving skills and increasing rural Alaskan’s knowledge in vegetable gardening, livestock production and food preservation. In addition, this position will engage in applied research and demonstrations and will support community agricultural development plans and 4-H/youth programs.

"My first exposure to a village was in Tanacross, and there is a great deal of work that can be done to help the community there," Moore said. "I look forward to recruiting volunteers as the program has been sitting still for some time. We would really like to network, for example, with home economists, to help build effective educational programs that would benefit the villages."

Prior to joining extension, Moore owned and operated the Retail Garden Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina, for over nine years and has a continued interest there. He holds a bachelor’s of science and horticulture degree from Clemson University in South Carolina.

Moore’s office is located at Tanana Chiefs Conference in Fairbanks. The position is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Extension Indian Reservation Program and is a part of UAF’s College of Rural Alaska Cooperative Extension Service.
